Noam Chomsky: Closet Capitalist?

Noam Chomsky, the man who endlessly speaks of class warfare, who claims that tax 'havens' are 'allowed' so the brunt of the tax burden is laid on the poor...has decided to put his growing wealth [$2 million] in a Trust Fund of his own!

Hey Noam, contradictions cannot exist.

Here's the story:

The Teaching Company Lectures

I remember some time back, when Diana [Noodle Food] mentioned she'd been racing through the lecture series she'd purchased from the above company. I thought, that's interesting, and promptly forgot about it.
Last month, I got one of their sale catalogs and boy, I ordered three series of lectures. Ancient Greece, History of Jazz, and Plato's Republic. As you might guess, I couldn't stop there, last week, I ordered FIVE more series.[!] Luckily, these are all 'sale' prices, or I would be bankrupt. Heh. The five new ones are: Science and Religion, Aristotles Ethics, Argumentation and Rhetoric, The Aeneid by Virgil, Einstein's theory for non-scientists. Quite a line-up, I must say.
One thing I've noticed is that the majority of these lectures [or, at least, the ones I have so far,] are "Catholic-centered." In a way, since Catholics are more philosophical than most all other religions [I think] it is a good test of Objectivist epistemology, and my own thinking skills, to listen, learn and compare. I am currently listening to the Science and Religion course, where Dr. Principe denounces that there was/is a schism between faith and reason. Can you guess, though, where 'reason' is placed in this equation? Right. As the 'handmaiden' of faith. One simply can't exist without the other according to him.

These courses are first rate, high quality lectures that can sharpen your thinking and reasoning skills, and when on sale, are a wonderful augment to any college or university training you may have, or have had in your life. Some courses are as low as $19.95, regularly $130. So you can get some bargains, and you have a money back guarantee.

The Savage Battleground of our Public Schools

This cogent editorial was found at Capitalism Magazine. An excellent critique of how our schools aim to destroy the self, and the tools needed, by the individual student, to successfully combat that battleground.

Happenstance

I've just returned from the bookstore, where I had a pleasant conversation with a fine looking young woman who, as it happened, was looking in the philosophy section at Rand's books :-) I couldn't let this opportunity slip by so I said, "excuse me, are you interested in Ayn Rand's ideas?" She said a friend had recommended her works to her and what would I recommend to her (!). I said she should read 'The Fountainhead' but then asked if she preferred fiction or non-fiction. She said non-fiction, and had 'Return of The Primitive' and 'Philosophy: Who Needs It?' already in hand, which I praised highly and also recommended to her 'The Virtue of Selfishness,' "which explains her theory of ethics". We then sauntered over to the Literature section, where I pulled out FH for her.
We continued our conversation about Rand and FH in particular briefly. I left before she did, but she had all four books in hand when we parted company.
Talk about a mood lift! I needed that!

Craig Biddle's Introduction is now online. Is it ever worth reading! This is a landmark event in Objectivism's history and I welcome this quarterly magazine to the world arena of ideas.

Behind the Scenes on the Ports Issue

Federal Computer Week has a 'back story' on the Ports/Dubai issue. Speaking for myself, handing over our Ports to our avowed enemies is not "good for business". [Homeland Security Chief said that].
This isn't capitalism. It may be "crony capitalism", but it's not capitalism. It is suicidal. This is the perfect nightmare blend of altruism and appeasement. Bush is finally becomming more consistent in his policies, and that's not good.

Excerpt from FCW:

Last year, Bush tried to consolidate the port security program into the larger grant program, but Congress rebuffed him and chose to keep the grant program separate. TIP was created to enhance security at port, railway, mass transit and other critical infrastructure facilities.

However, officials from the American Association of Port Authorities (AAPA), which represents 80 U.S. ports, said if the program is consolidated into a larger program, they would have to compete for funds against other transit systems, such as buses or rail.

Port security “needs will be marginalized or get lost in the shuffle,” Kurt Nagle, AAPA’s president and chief executive officer, said at a press conference today in Washington, D.C.

Officials said security needs for port operators remain great. Port officials want to implement wireless networks, interoperable communications equipment, a Global Positioning System, credentialing systems, closed-circuit television, surveillance cameras, radar tracking and other related technologies, they said.

But Bernard Groseclose, president and CEO of the South Carolina Ports Authority (SCPA) and AAPA chairman, said the grants program has been drastically underfunded despite the need to meet certain federal security requirements. The current level of funding for the program is $175 million. He said federal funds, which are supposed to pay for a larger share of security improvements, have only matched a small portion of what ports have spent on security so far.

40% of British Muzzle-ims

Poll reveals 40% of Muslims want sharia law in UK.

Excerpt...

Four out of 10 British Muslims want sharia law introduced into parts of the country, a survey reveals today.

The ICM opinion poll also indicates that a fifth have sympathy with the "feelings and motives" of the suicide bombers who attacked London last July 7, killing 52 people, although 99 per cent thought the bombers were wrong to carry out the atrocity.

50pc said interracial relations were worsening
Overall, the findings depict a Muslim community becoming more radical and feeling more alienated from mainstream society, even though 91 per cent still say they feel loyal to Britain.

Weekend Conference on Law in Colorado

Diana Hsieh has asked many of her fellow bloggers to post a link to Front Range Objectivism's Weekend Conference on Law, Individual Rights and the Judicial System.
Taking place on March 4-5 2006, in Denver Colorado. I city I love and would dearly like to revisit someday.
It looks to be an awesome gathering of 'New Intellectuals' and therefore worth the effort to attend.

http://www.frontrangeobjectivism.com/2006-law.html

My apologies for posting this 'late'. Early registration [where you could've saved $75] deadline was yesterday. My bad, and I'm sorry. Still, what price freedom?

Snow anyone?

Nor'easter dumped about 20 inces of snow here in central Connecticut today. Still snowing lightly. It was an adventure driving home from work this morning, let me tell ya! [I work night shift].

Now the @#$%^*U#@$@$%^@$ clean-up begins. I hope my teeny snow blower is 'man enough' to get this outta here!

Snow. It's beautiful to look at, hell to shovel.

The Simplest Thing...[and In Protest!]

I had not realized, until today, that Gus has been linking to, and quoting from Bruno's Blog "The Simplest Thing". Bruno has posted two great quotes from two great authors concerning the Muslim protests about the cartoons that this illiterate mob is 'offended' by.
Anyway, I visited his blog because of Gus's reference and found, to my delight, Bruno has a link to The Secular Foxhole. Well now! I must return the favor and tell all my readers to go and visit his blog, now posted in my Blogroll of Fame.
Here are the two quotes I favor so much...

From "The Lord of the Rings":

“Hold your ground, hold your ground. Sons of Gondor, of Rohan, my brothers. I see in your eyes the same fear that would take the heart of me. A day may come when the courage of men fails, when we forsake our friends and break all bonds of fellowship, but it is not this day. An hour of wolves and shattered shields, when the age of men comes crashing down, but it is not this day. This day we fight! For all that you hold dear on this good Earth, I bid you stand, Men of the West!”

From Ayn Rand's "Capitalism: The Unknown Ideal":

"The only power of a mob, as against an individual, is greater muscular strenght--i.e., plain, brute physical force. The attempt to solve social problems by means of physical force is what a civilized society is established to prevent. The advocates of mass civil disobedience admit that their purpose is intimidation. A society that tolerates intimidation as a means of settling disputes--the physical intimidation of some men or groups by others--loses its moral right to exist as a social system, and its collapse does not take long to follow." (bolds are mine)

To join the fray, in protesting the protester's, I say this:

Mohammed, I spit in the drunken derelict sperm that made you and your pathetic faith.

You can quote me.

Two of My Favorites..

Here's song lyrics to two of my favorites. They're under copyright protection from their publishers, so watch it!

1] How Long

Ace

How long has this been goin' on
How long has this been goin' on

Well, if friends with their fancy persuasion
Don't admit that it's part of a scheme
But I can't help but have my suspicions
'Cause I ain't quite as dumb as I seem
And you said you was never intendin'
To break up our singing this way
But there ain't any use in pretendin'
It could happen to us any day

How long has this been goin' on
How long has this been goin' on

---- musical interlude ----

Oh, your friends with their fancy persuasion
Don't admit that it's part of a scheme
But I can't help but have my suspicion
'Cause I ain't quite as dumb as I seem
Oh, you said you was never intending
To break up our singing this way
But there ain't any use in pretendin'
It could happen to us any day

And how long has this been going on
How long has this been going on
How long

How long has this been going on
How long has this been going on
How long has this been going on
How long
How long has this been going on

2] Capitalism

Oingo Boingo [Danny Elfman]
from the CD "Only A Lad"

There's nothing wrong with Capitalism
There's nothing wrong with free enterpirse
Don't try to make me feel guilty
I'm so tired of hearing you cry

There's nothing wrong with making some profit
If you ask me, I'll say it's just fine
There's nothing wrong with wanting to live nice

I'm so tired of hearing you whine
About the revolution
Bringin' down the rich
When was the last time you dug a ditch,
baby

If it ain't one thing
Then it's the other
Any cause that crosses your path
Your heart bleeds for anyone's brother
I've got to tell you you're a pain in the ass

You criticize with plenty of vigor
You rationalize everything that you do
With catchy phrases and heavy quotations
And everyone is crazy but you

(Chorus)
You're just a middle-class socialist brat
From a suburban family and you never
really had to work
And you tell me that we've got to get back
To the struggling masses(whoever they are)
You talk, talk, talk about suffering and pain
Your mouth is bigger than your entire brain
What the hell do you know about suffering
and pain...

(Repeat first verse)
(Repeat chorus)

There's nothing wrong with Capitalism
There's nothing wrong with Capitalism
There's nothing wrong with Capitalism

Five Things You Should Know Before Privacy Becomes Optional

I'll let this blogger explain:

http://wulfsnews.blogspot.com/2006/01/5-things-you-should-know-about-before_28.html

I'm always grateful...

to those who can express issues better than I can. Here's a great example from the Ayn Rand Institute.

The Injustice of Saddam's Trial
By granting Hussein a trial, justice is perverted.
By Elan Journo

The American-endorsed trial of Saddam Hussein is touted as an opportunity to render justice and lay the groundwork for an Iraqi transition from the arbitrary courts of a dictatorship to a proper legal system. But the trial will accomplish neither goal.

A trial that presumes Hussein's innocence can achieve nothing but a travesty of justice.

Saddam Hussein is not a private citizen, whose guilt requires proof in an objective court of law, but a dictator whose incontestable evil was manifest to any rational observer of his tyranny. The Bush administration, after all, determined that Hussein was so vicious that we had to go to war to topple his regime.

Once we defeat and capture a militant dictator like Hussein, he deserves to be definitively condemned as evil and then executed--immediately, or after any valuable information is extracted from him. Prior to his execution, there can be a legitimate reason to hold a public hearing--not to establish his guilt, but to fully expose his secretive dictatorship by publicly cataloguing its myriad vile deeds. Such a hearing would recognize that, unlike a private citizen, a dictator is responsible not merely for his own individual acts of violence but for all crimes committed by his regime, whether or not in any given case he himself pulled the trigger or gave a direct order to murder the victims.

But the trial now underway evades Hussein's incontrovertible culpability, absurdly presumes him innocent, and demands that his "command responsibility" be established for particular acts of murder. In the case that began Oct. 19, the prosecution is required to prove that Hussein specifically ordered his thugs to carry out the 1982 massacre of some 140 people. This is as perverse as presuming Hitler, Stalin, or Mao innocent in the millions murdered by their regimes--and then groping for evidence that they personally ordered the execution of a handful of dissidents in one small village.

It is outrageous that after more than two years into a war that has cost billions of dollars and thousands of American lives, we regard as legitimate the possibility that Hussein could be found culpable for only some minuscule number of murders or even not guilty. It is outrageous that he is given a defense team of 1,500 lawyers, that he is granted the right to appeal a guilty verdict, and that he is allowed to address the court. In one more injustice against all his victims, domestic and foreign, Hussein has eagerly exploited this international stage--paid for with American money and blood--to challenge and scold his Iraqi victims, to rail against the United States, and to cheer on the insurgents murdering Americans.

And yet this trial, the epitome of injustice, is defended as paving the way for a truly just legal system. Proponents argue that, whatever one thinks of the specifics of the trial, it marks the transformation of Iraq's judiciary from courts subservient to a dictator's whims, to courts objectively determining guilt or innocence. But the trial does no such thing.

Observe that only Iraqis were deemed qualified to decide Hussein's culpability. With President Bush's encouragement and blessing, the Iraqi leadership was given full control of the proceedings--and deliberately excluded American judges. Though there are plenty of American judges with decades of experience under a proper legal system--and few, if any Iraqis with comparable experience--American participation was viewed as unacceptable. Why were only members of Hussein's ethnic tribe deemed fit to judge him?

Because justice, on the premise of the trial, is determined by the tribe; the tribe alone is the ultimate arbiter of right and wrong, good and evil, innocence and guilt. On this view, a meticulously logical assessment of universally available facts has no bearing on justice. Whatever the tribal group feels is just--regardless of evidence or logic--is just. A trial conducted on this premise is a repudiation of justice as an objective principle.

The trial is not, in essence, a departure from the subjective courts of the former regime. Instead of Hussein capriciously prescribing a "just" verdict, that arbitrary power now belongs to the Iraqi tribe--or any sub-tribe (whether Sunni, Shiite, Kurd) that wrests control of the courts.

This trial is irredeemably corrupt. The United States--which gave Iraq millions of dollars and sent lawyers and forensic investigators to launch the proceedings--must immediately withdraw its moral sanction from this travesty of justice.

The Book Meme

gus van horn threw down the gauntlet, so I'm picking it up...

Total Number of Books Owned
Probably close to five hundred. Of which 100 to 200 have been read. Lots of boxes filled with books I want to get to but can't find the time. Yet.

Last Book Bought
Two actually. "Going Postal" by Pratchett [One of Gus's links mentioned this and I thought I'd give this writer a shot. Apparently this is one of a whole slew of books set in the author's universe. I hope I'm not joining the story in mid-stream]
"Memoirs of a Geisha" by Arthur Golden. I prefer foreign films to the dredge Hollywood produces, and this was assumably the companion to the movie.

Last Book Read
"The Lions of Al-Rassan" by Guy Gavriel Kay. Canadian author. This man is a real craftsman. In short, if you want to read "near literature quality" fantasy, he's your man.

Five Books That Mean A Lot To Me [In no particular order]

1] The Fountainhead. Rand. The book that opened up the universe for me. I was a total slug. An aimless drifter of 23 when this book was handed to me. I started reading and could not let the book out of my sight, even for a moment. It was my 'security blanket' for months, until I finished it. Hell, I even slept with it! Also, reading it made me use a dictionary for the first time. A practice I embrace even more so, today.

2] Atlas Shrugged. Rand. Is there a theme here? The great American novel has been written and this is it. I have read this novel cover to cover 25 times, since first reading it in 1979. Literally hundreds more times just opening it and reading whatever my eyes fall on until I have to stop to sleep or go out. When depressed, I would reach for this book and start reading Part III in Atlantis. My thoughts and mood changed quickly, as you might imagine.

3] The Ominous Parallels. Leonard Peikoff. A masterwork his first time out of the blocks, if you ask me. I have read this book four times and learn more each time. Too bad for America this book is all but unknown and unappreciated. Maybe in the near future, it will get its just reward. I hope it happens when Leonard is still with us.

4] "93". Victor Hugo. A book so powerful, I still vividly remember sitting at the edge of my chair, rigid, stiff, sweating--and unable to stop reading. Talk about captivation!

5] Booked to Die. John Dunning. Another good craftsman who is serious about presenting intelligent stories for his readers. You owe it to yourself to give this man a try and start with this book, please.

America's Shifting Leftward...

...according to Dick Morris. A man I have virtually no respect for at all. This article actually starts out decently [first paragraph] then nosedives from there. He then claims the leftward tilt is due to the 'success' of the Bush administration in 'solving' [yes, solving!] the Republican agenda.
But, the kicker for me was this paragraph:

"On the environment, Americans have already decided that global warming is causing weather aberrations like the hurricane activity this summer. The administration can no longer keep its head in the sand on this issue. More than any other subject, this area of Bush blindness is making America Democratic."

Funny thing that last paragraph. Listening to coworkers, sadly, it appears he's right. People are accepting the global warmimg scare by osmosis, or rather, by default. The lack of critical thinking by -far too many- American's is increasing the dangers we face as a country and as individuals.

New Mexico Spaceport

I became a "Space Cadet" on July 20 1969, my fifteenth birthday. When Neil Armstrong set foot on the moon. Living in Ohio at the time, it was hard not to be impressed! I still vividly remember watching every moment of that mission I could, whenever it was on tv.

I don't know how old this press release is, but VirginGalactic, has purchased a 27 square mile tract of land in New Mexico to build a spaceport for their space tourist vehicles, built in co-operation with Burt Rutan's company, Scaled Composites.

http://www.virgingalactic.com/en/news.asp

As an aside, Overstock carries a great Australian DVD film, "The Dish" about their space telescope assistance in that mission. It is a wonderful, heartwarming film. Under $10 at Overstock.

Infiltration

Just finished watching BookTV on C-SPAN who had author Paul Sperry on, talking about his new book, "Infiltration: How Muslim Spies and Subversives have Penetrated Washington".

The book is an expose on how our PC leadership has compromised our saftey and security to apppease Muslim fanatics in this country. The author probably has no familiarity with Objectivism, but this book may be of interest to any American who wants to keep, and expand, the all but forgotten political ideal of Individual Rights and personal freedom.

The book is an invitation for citizens to 'wake up' to the dangers we face from our own cowardly leadership, as well as the enemies within and without our borders.

1-1-06

I started the new year Chasing Freedom. That is, I rented a movie called by that name featuring Juliette Lewis and Layla Alizada. Inspired by a true story, it is about a lawyer [Lewis] "who takes on the pro-bono case of a woman seeking her freedom in America. After barely escaping the unspeakable horrors of her Taliban controlled homeland. Meena arrives in the United States only to have her freedom stripped away again. Now she must convince her lawyer and herself that she is worth fighting for and face the toughest battle of her life. If she fails, she will be returned to Afghanistan and face certain death."

This movie may be of interest to those who are concerned about immigration law and protecting our own freedoms. The films flaws are minor compared to what any thinking person can gain from watching it.

Guy Gavriel Kay

Here’s a new author, added to my list of favorites. I get so much good feedback when I mention my favorite authors, I’m adding this Canadian to the “list”.
I am currently reading The Lions of Al-Rassan, a stand-alone novel of his. GGK specializes in ‘historical fantasy’. That is, he spends about six months a year, during a writing project, to immerse himself in a period and a region he wants to explore. This novel is based on Moorish Spain and one of the characters is modeled after El Cid. His characterization is splendid, the background is tantalizing and the storyline keeps you invested for the ride. I have not yet read his other works, but plan to do so during the year next year. Recommended.

Here is his "official" website.

Spiritual Crisis in America

From Dr. Michael Hurd's Daily Dose of Reason:

"The spiritual crisis is psychological in nature. It stems from the fact that people don't know The spiritual crisis in America today is not from a lack of religion, or a lack of government programs. The spiritual crisis is psychological in nature. It stems from the fact that people don't know why life on earth, and specifically in America, is, and should be, a great thing. Despite this spiritual crisis, much is still great in the Westernized world. Therein lies the hope."

I would argue that religion is one of the main causes of said 'crisis'. Our self/mind/soul is all we possess, but we are ceaselessly told to sacrifice all our wants/desires/thoughts and place faith in other's or place it in an alleged 'higher being'

Conservatism = Hash of Contradictions

From the Reagan 2020 website, we have the blueprint for defining the conservative platform for this American Century..

http://reagan2020.us/platform

Here's the Preamble:

We the New Federalists advocate individual, family and community rights and responsibilities in acts of self-governance, as set forth by our Founders, in originally establishing our nation by the Declaration of Independence and later codifying our governing principles in our Republic's Constitution. We begin from our Founders' premises, that self-evident truths exist, and are the only right ground for political declarations that offer a decent respect for the opinions of humankind in establishing a nation among the powers of the earth.

Happy Thanksgiving!

"Thanksgiving is a typically American holiday. In spite of its religious form(giving thanks to God for a good harvest), it's essential, secular meaning is a celebration of successful production. It is a producer's holiday. The lavish meal is a symbol of the fact that abundant consumption is the result and reward of production. Abundance is (or was and ought to be) America's pride--just as it is the pride of American parents that their children need never know starvation."

My friend Shadow

I lost my best pal yesterday. Shadow was a Pomeranian who was a unique and amazing dog. He was the coolest of cool. Smart, sophisticated, well-mannered, loyal. All of five pounds, he had the heart of a Lion. All he did was give love. I've had dogs as pets all my life. He was the best of the best. Sixteen years old. There's a hole in my heart. I will miss him.

More on "America's Persecuted Minority"

Anyone with common sense knows that when the Senate "ordered" Big Oil execs to appear before a panel and "explain" third quarter profits, it was just another grandstanding sham, used to pacify "angry voters". [Another grandstanding sham was the hearings on the 'steroid scandal' in baseball]...

Via Charlotte Capitalist, here's a Bloomberg columnist saying much the same...

Angry Jordanians Rally to Protest Bombings

Yahoo News and AP report that, "Thousands of Jordanians rallied in the capital and other cities shouting "Burn in Hell, Abu Musab al-Zarqawi!" a day after three deadly bombings that killed at least 59 people. Officials suspected Iraqi involvement in the attacks, which were claimed by al-Qaida's Iraq branch."

Either last year, or earlier this year, I remember seeing on the National Geographic Channel, an interesting bio of King Abdullah II, who appears to be a staunch ally of ours.

Freedom of Religion?

Dr. Michael Hurd on "Freedom of Religion"

"There is not, and there should not be, any such thing as "freedom of religion." Think about what this simple little phrase implies. It implies that people have freedom not merely to privately practice (if any) they choose; it implies that people have the "right" to impose the practice of religion on other people. Freedom OF religion is a blank check for religion being free to do what it pleases. The ultimate manifestation of this idea, that today we know all to well, is that of militant Islamics."

Go. Read the rest of it.

2 new CD's

Yesterday I went to Border's and found two new CD's to add to my collection. The Long Road Home, the Ultimate John Fogerty collection and a dual CD/DVD of Chris Botti's To Love Again.
Both were on sale and are well worth having. I recommend them highly.
The production quality of the Fogerty CD is nearly flawless. The song selection equally so. The wife 'discovered' Chris Botti at work one day earlier this year and let's just say, I'll eventually own all he does. A man of enormous talent and sophistication, it's a shame he's hardly known outside a small circle of listeners and admirers.

Societies decline when "God is on their side"

DUH! I thought this was obvious to any thinking person. Thanks to Paul @ Noodle Food for the story and link.

http://www.timesonline.co.uk/article/0,,2-1798944,00.html

As an aside, I hardly think comparing the US to Britain, and the rest of Europe, who are bathed in a secularized form of altruism is a valid indication of America's ills. Altruism kills everywhere it is tried and practiced. Whether it takes an hour or a hundred years, altruism, religion, any form of mysticism is in its essence: death worship.
I've never heard of the journal this report is published in, and I can guess, with high certainty, that the professors undertaking this study were "liberal/socialist" in nature.
Neither European's nor American's understand that in America, people are free to believe whatever they wish--in private--that is what the principle of Individual Rights stands for, as an philosophical absolute. Since we no longer govern by, nor understand, that founding principle, in the 'majority-rule democracy' that we have lowered ourselves too, it's gang rule baby! Whoever has the biggest gang of the moment, rules to pander to their own kind.
America is a secular Republic, not a democracy. Founded as a tribute to the Enlightenment, American government must remain secular, or impartial, only taking action to protect the Individual Rights of its citizens.
If Christianity, or any religion for that matter, were the actual foundation of human freedom, as nearly every conservative claims, then why, when religion held sway over the entire earth, is that period known as the Dark Ages?

Serenity

I went to see Serenity yesterday afternoon and was not too disappointed. The movie version/extension of the TV series Firefly was visually appealing and Joss Whedon (sp?) writes a good script in a "Man vs. State" old-west/futuristic themed motion picture.
Rumor has it the crew of Serenity has signed a three picture deal, with yesterday's release being their first.
It's always intriguing to see someone who grasps, if only rudimentarily, that necessary theme of the individual against the massive mindless bureaucracy [The Alliance, in this case.]
The only gripes I have are one minor and one major. They [the gripes] have to deal with what happens to Wash [Alan Tudyk, the pilot] and to Book. We are left hanging with Book, [Ron Glass] as it is never explained what his purpose is/was either in the series or this movie, other than he was some sort of 'freelance' preacher, walking a thin line between The Alliance and The Independents. Speaking for myself, this is a glaring omission, but it doesn't detract from the film.
Nathan Fillion [Mal Reynolds] looks to be a superb actor and I hope he has a bright future

Overall, if you like good acting and smart dialogue, check out Serenity. It helps if you know the tv series, but it's not vital.

Quote of the Day

"The individual human mind (is holy to me). In a child's power to master the multiplication table there is more sanctity than in all your shouted amens and holy-holies and hosannas. An idea is a greater monument than a cathedral and the advance of man's knowledge is a greater miracle than all the sticks turned to snakes and the parting of the waters."

The Epistemological 'Perfect Storm'

Author Dan Simmons, whom I've mentioned favorably on this site before, publishes a monthly letter to fans on his website, that I'm linking to below.
Readers of this blog may know that I've recommended some of his books, especially 'Darwin's Blade' and 'The Crook Factory', along with his sci-fi series 'Hyperion'.
In this month's letter, he talks of his epistemological 'storm' i.e., "one of those rare and serendipitous conjunctions of books randomly read resulting in a quantum leap in conceptual understanding on an important issue or opaque era or human dilemma or complex idea or all four of these catagories and more..."

Mr. Simmons goes on to lambast creationism among other things, but says this interesting quote: "How can I think and write with greater clarity while simultaneously discovering and creating more ambiguity?"

I'm linking to this open letter not as an endorsement of Mr. Simmons own epistemology or of his conclusions, but as an exercise in 'Philosophical Detection' for those who wish to read a stimulating article.

Best premises!

Bush considering use of military on U.S. soil

Am I growing more paranoid as I get older, or does this sound as ominous to you as it does to me?

"President Bush's push to give the military a bigger role in responding to major disasters like Hurricane Katrina could lead to a loosening of legal limits on the use of federal troops on U.S. soil."

Here's a sentence I just love...

"Bush did not define the wider role he envisions for the military."

That's right! I forgot! We must be flexible in our policy making! No firm principles here!

http://www.military.com/NewsContent/0,13319,77271,00.html?ESRC=army-a.nl

Had the National Guard been here to do its job, instead of in Iraq and wherever else he's put them, this discussion wouldn't be necessary now, would it? Perhaps that's why he and his braintrust moved the NG offsite to begin with, to set up this discussion and possible implementation. Again, is this paranoia or just observation of fact?
Readers of this blog should know I have great respect for our military, but that I strongly dislike the way they are being manipulated by this administration.

Further Proof that Altruism Destroy's the Good

The author of the article linked below states that we've 'gifted' Iran with the defeat of Hussein in Iraq. I, and many other Objectivist's have seen that the neo-cons rush to invade Iraq was not the correct way to go about defeating terrorism, or Islam, for that matter.
Yes, Saddam was a thug--and wrongly perceived as secular by our genius intellectuals and politico's--but now Iran is doing an end-run to Syria and other Muslim states. They are not going to allow, next-door, a pro-American form of government (weak as that is). That's why they are in hot pursuit of nuclear weapons and deals with other muslim states to spread that 'technology'.

Go. Read. Write to your reps and the President.

Scarce dollars and a contribution quandary

Obviously, the tragedy in New Orleans and other parts of the hurricane ravaged south are a gut-wrenching sight and my sympathies abound for the honestly struggling people who have lost "everything". Gus van Horn has a very worthy organization that has requested funds to assist in rebuilding it's home for veterans, and I certainly would donate to that cause---however---I recently received a letter from the Anthem Foundation for Objectivist Scholarship requesting a donation, or pledge of a donation, for the work it is doing in spreading the good works of young, talented, Objectivist scholars who are already in academia and the prospects of new programs, especially at an Ivy League school, among others, that the foundation has already received requests to set up as soon as possible. They are soliciting $140,000.00 from ARI donors to assist in this hugely important step to spread Ayn Rand's ideas in five new universities across the country.
Setting aside the fact that millions and billions of dollars are already pouring into New Orleans and other ravaged areas, via many good American's, and all of us via the Federal Government, the sum of $140,000 is not that much to try to obtain from a small group of dedicated people.
Speaking for myself, my dollars will have more positive long-term effect for me, for America and for the American people, going to the Anthem Foundation, than to any relief charity. If I could do both, I would, without hesitation. This month however, my meager/spare dollars are going to plant the seeds for a more positive future. Even if I don't live to see it, I know that my efforts will have made it come into being.

Note however, [what I consider to be a misnomer in] the actual title of the piece. Doesn't this equate "reason" with dictatorhip? See for yourself, if I'm correct.

Citizen Bloggers

Does citizen journalism during the London bombings signal a media revolution? The average person now has the tools to become a key newsgatherer, whom big media will ignore at their peril.

Innocents in War

Don Watkins, over at Anger Management, has a cogent blog post on who is to blame for the death of innocents in wartime.
It's always a great pleasure to read younger men and women who are gifted thinkers and writers. Mr Watkins is definetly one of them. I visit his blog every day.

Go. Read.

Two Peas in a Pod

I'm currently enjoying "The Da Vinci Code" by Dan Brown. In that novel, the organization known as Opus Dei is used as a backdrop of corruption and conspiracy. Well, knowing Mr. Brown's capabilities as a thorough researcher, I wonder. Anyway, the teachings of this "cult" are based on a book known as "The Way" or "My Way" by Josemaria Escriva.

All this blather is to point to an Letter I found from Escriva to General Francisco Franco, that endorses Franco's pronouncement of the catholic faith as the barometer of his rule.

http://www.odan.org/escriva_to_franco.htm

Here is the key passage of that letter: [quoting Escriva]

"...I cannot help but rejoice as a priest and Spaniard that the Chief of State's authoritative voice should proclaim that, "The Spanish nation considers it a badge of honor to accept the law of God according to the one and true doctrine of the Holy Catholic Church, inseperable faith of the national conscience which will inspire its legislation."

As objectivists, we know that altruism is the foundation of all religion, and, "the hatred of the good, because it is good." Speaking for myself, I didn't learn that it was also the foundation of Marxism until I read Miss Rand. Marxism being the secularized version of religious ethics.

It all boils down to, "those who fail to learn from history, are doomed to repeat it."

Sad. Damn sad.

Joke of the Day

WARNING: Not rated PG-13

Jesus walks into the hotel, approaching the check-in. He tosses three nails upon the counter and asks, "Can you put me up for the night?"
